October may be the official month of recognition, but cultural connection does not need to begin or end there.

Filipino American History Month creates space to learn about Filipino American history and recognize the community's contributions to the United States. In 2009, the U.S. Congress recognized the celebration of Filipino American History Month through H. Res. 780, alongside Senate Resolution 298.

October was chosen in connection with October 18, 1587, when historical records recognize the arrival of Filipinos, referred to as “Luzones Indios,” at what is now Morro Bay, California. This date is recognized as the earliest documented Filipino presence in the continental United States.
